Photo of the day: the tree of love, Panama

This tree of love held his host so tight that it eventually strangled it, explaining its more common name of strangler fig. It is not really a tree, but vines that grow around them. Starting as epiphytes (living as a plant in a tree), they turn into hemiepiphytes after sending roots down and uses its host to grow and reach the sunlight.

Sometimes becoming massive trees of their own, they are very impressive. Walking through the tree of love is a surreal experience.
