With its 1394-metre-high peak, the Maderas volcano seems small compared to its big brother, the Concepcion volcano, dominating western Ometepe island. However, reaching its lagoon may very well be more challenging than summitting Concepcion. Whichever time of the year, the trail remains muddy and steep while hiking through its cloud forest. Once at the top it is only after a very steep climb down that one can be rewarded with the refreshing waters of its lagoon often hidden in mist.
