Photo of the day: Shoes on a string on the left bank, Paris

I have often wondered about this strange phenomena of shoes tossed over power or phone cables, trees or else. Walking on the left back of Paris and witnessing this beautiful natural light prompted me to take the shot and research the meaning behind these dangling shoes.

It seems this weird habit started in the USA. Some throw one’s shoes to bully the person, some throw them when leaving a neighbourhood, some toss them up as the owner is deceased and his or her spirit might need the shoes when coming back to earth, or others shoot them up to the sky to celebrate their retirement.

Keep your eyes open for this weird street decoration!

  1. what a great pic! THanks for the explanations, I ve seen so many of those in different countries. I also heard that in some towns, they were the “flags” of Gangs defining their territories ?…
