In the heart of Paris, a stone throw from Notre Dame, modern and street arts are side by side with the oldest parts of the city. By this huge graffiti, one can walk around the colourful sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle bathing in the Stravinsky fountain, towards the Centre Pompidou before enjoying a stroll in the historic and lively district of Le Marais with its hôtels particuliers (mansions), hip stores and galleries, trendy restaurants and bars. Highly criticized when it was under construction in the seventies, the Centre Pompidou designed by architects Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers and Gianfranco Franchini, hosting the museum of modern art is now a favourite landmark of Paris with many street performers putting up shows for tourists on its roomy square.
