The architecture of the Oslo Opera House is really playful, and resonates with its surroundings, making it a favourite promenade and a gathering point for locals and tourists alike. The warm woods inside contrast with its glass and white iceberg-like structure.
An international and anonymous contest was held in 1999, and it is the Oslo based design office Snøhetta which won. Since its completion in 2007, ahead of schedule and budget by about 7% (!), this building has kept receiving prestigious awards: the World Architecture Award, the Mies van der Rohe European Union Prize for Architecture, the EDRA (Environmental Design Research Association) Great Places Award, the European Prize for Urban Public Space, The International Architecture Award and The Global Award for Sustainable Architecture.
